Social Stories
Carol Gray is *the* creator of Social Stories. She has written a social story on Coronavirus and pandemics and has made this gem available for free. Yes it’s written for children but reading it as an adult - it also has some comforting elements. Check out ‘My Story About Pandemics and the Coronavirus’ by Carol Gray for yourself.
Anyone a fan of The Gruffalo? Axel Scheffler, the illustrator from The Gruffalo and other fantastic books, teamed up with a whole slew of people to create ‘Coronavirus - A book for children’. The team includes Professor Graham Medley (Professor of Infectious Disease Modeling at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine), two headteachers/principles, a deputy headteacher/assistant principle, and a clinical psychologist. It’s a goldmine of information and answers many questions you may be hearing. It’s also been made available for free so pick up your copy of Coronavirus A book for children.
No surprise that we’re Conscious Discipline fans around here. And boy have they come through during this challenging time (they wish us well!). They have their own story Shubert and Sophie Stay Home. This story serves as a reminder of our breathing strategies and working together to help stay calm and engaged during this change in our routine. Staying home can result in some big emotions. Shubert and Sophie Stay Home serves as a guideline for talking through these big emotions and a positive reminder of the power of deep breaths. Grab your copy of Shubert and Sophie Stay Home (also for free!)
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital released a coloring book/social story combo. What a great way to give children some ownership over this social story! For adults, perhaps some therapeutic coloring? As with all the other social stories, this one is also completely free. So gather your crayons, your artistic flair, and put your own mark on this social story!
